Recycled Plastic
Approximately 1.6 million tons of plastic is used per year, with it's methods of disposal being:
Recycled - 135,000 tons ( 8%)
Incinerated - 200,000 tons (13%)
Sent to landfill - 1,265,000 tons (79%)
An indication of what can be diverted from landfill:
14,000 to 16,000 plastic bags to make a 5ft recycled plastic picnic bench, 95kg saved from landfill
10,000 to 12,000 plastic bags to make a 5ft traditional recycled plastic seat, 49kg saved from landfill
2,000 to 3,000 plastic bags to make a 4ft junior recycled plastic sturdy bench, 11kg saved from landfill
Recycled plastic can be used for bollards, waymarkers and signage in public parks and open spaces, as well as for benches; planters; fencing; decking; path edging; finger posts; litter/compost bins; riverbank supports and walkways.

Recycled plastic has the advantage of being weatherproof, maintenance free, versatile and durable, it does not rot, corrode or splinter. It is impervious to fungal and insect attack and does not harbour rot or bacteria.

Reclaimed hardwood timber
2,500 tons of re-usable timber is going to landfill every working day, of which over
200 tons is tropical hardwood timber.
Rotting wood in landfill emits methane, a greenhouse effect gas
Reclaimed timber can be used for bollards, waymarkers and signage in public parks and open spaces, as well as for benches; planters; fencing; decking; path edging; finger posts; litter/compost bins; riverbank supports and walkways.
